About S/Y Irene

Irene

In 2011 while we (a working couple with limited assets) were living aboard Marcy, the pretty stern of a boat for sale on the neighboring dock at Shilshole marina caught our attention. One thing led to another, and we found ourselves the new owners of the 50’ ketch Irene, a scaled down Herreshoff Ticonderoga. Compared with Marcy’s deep fin keel, Irene’s long keel makes for a shallower but heavier vessel. In combination with the ketch rig, we trade a bit of quick turning ability, upwind speed and rig simplicity in return for comfort at sea and easy handling in tough conditions.

By May 2016 Irene was fitted out with new sails and electronics and our cruising kitty was replenished. Time for adventure again! So we headed north for Alaska, sailing to False Pass in the Aleutians, and returned to Puget Sound for the winter. In 2017 we sailed back up north to Nome. When the arctic ice had cleared sufficiently a couple of weeks later, we continued on through the Northwest Passage to the Davis Straits, Greenland, and then on south for a winter in Beaufort, South Carolina. 2018 was the year we finally crossed the Atlantic to Europe and spent the winter in Scotland. In 2019 we sailed from Scotland into the Mediterranean.
